This survey involved more than 4000 respondents.
- 24% of under 18's had been attacked by fellow students
- 44% of under 18's had been harassed by fellow students
- 79% had been called names by fellow students
- 40% of violent attacks took place in school
Playing it Safe: a survey of 300 schools carried out by The Institute of Education/THT/ Sonewall in 1998
- 82% of schools were aware of homophobic abuse
- 26% were aware of homophobic violence
- 6% of schools referred to homophobic bullying in their policies
The !Outproud/Oasis Internet Survey of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth 1997
This survey involved responses from 1,960 lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender young people between the ages of 10 and 25
- 90% of pupils stated that their schools had not discussed sexuality in a positive manner
- 80% of homophobic incidents at school were either ignored or received a light reprimand
- 71% had seriously thought of attempting suicide within the preceding year
- 23% had attempted suicide, of whom 62% had made two or more attempts
- 73% were aged 15 or less at their first attempt
- 82% of suicidal thoughts were related to sexuality

This survey involved responses from 1,960 lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender young people between the ages of 10 and 25
- By the age of 10, 21% were aware of their sexuality, but only 2% had accepted the fact
- By the age of 13, 66% were aware of their sexuality, but only 15% had accepted the fact
- By the age of 16, 93% were aware of their sexuality, but only 54% had accepted the fact.
