The Brighton and Hove Anti-Bullying Project
Brighton and Hove Anti-Bullying Project is a unique initiative jointly funded by Brighton and Hove City Council's Directorate of Children, Families and Schools and the Brighton and Hove Regeneration Partnership. The core work of the project is in actively responding to children and young people's concerns around bullying through work with schools, the youth and community service and other child settings. The project's remit also extends to specific work on preventing and responding to racist, homophobic and gender bullying as well as bullying linked to disability.
The project divides its work into four key areas: Support and Advisory work, developing Resources, delivering Training and Raising Awareness. The mainstay of this work is delivered by the project itself, but a major component of the project's three-year strategy (2002-2005) involves working in partnership with local community, voluntary and statutory sector agencies to develop, fund and deliver key pieces of anti-bullying work or project initiatives. In 2002-2003, the project has funded, amongst other initiatives, a confidential Bullying Helpline for children and young people, training for parents, a counselling support service for families, a Primary theatre project, Protective Behaviours training for teachers and playground 'buddying' training for young people in schools and their lunchtime supervisors. 'Coastkid', the website you are currently browsing, is a key part of this project's innovative approach.
Crucial to the development of a city-wide focus on anti-bullying has also been the development of comprehensive guidance for schools, the youth service and other settings on preventing and responding to bullying. Launched with the 'Bullyproof' poster campaign in October 2002, 500 copies of this core document are now in use across the city.
To order a copy of this guidance (at a cost of £10), to find out more about the work going on in Brighton and Hove, or to offer any feedback on the 'Coastkid' site please email the project co-ordinator at antibullyingproject@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
University College Chichester originally focused mainly on teacher education, but now offers a full range of degrees in many subjects.
Dr Chris Gaine is jointly in the schools of Education and Social Studies, specialising in race equality issues.
His other publications include several about Black and minority ethnic people's experiences in 'largely white' areas, three books about schooling in such areas, and a 'relative' of Coastkid, www.britkid.org
He also co-ordinated the Eurokid Project which led to www.spanishkid.org,
www.diversidadjuvenil.org and www.swedkid.nu
The team at UCC would be interested in developing similar websites based upon the successful template that has been developed. Please contact c.gaine@ucc.ac.uk
Kirstin Lamley has worked with Chris Gaine at UCC on various research projects. She is now working on her PhD.
