SARAH'S STORY - Marilyn Monroe was a size 14!
(Back in the girls toilets at lunch time - Sarah is crying in one of the cubicles)
Mel: Is that you Sarah?... Go on, say something.... Sarah, come on, I know it's you in there. Why don't you open the door?
(Sarah opens the door)
Mel: Oh Sarah, you've been crying here for ages haven't you? What's happened?
Sarah: It's Joanne and Kirstie. They've been having a go at me again.
Kelly: They're just losers Sarah. You've got to ignore them.
Sarah: It's all the time Kelly. Every time they see me it's.. Fat this, fat that.. I don't want to come to school half the time. You just don't know. Jamie and Terry joined in at dinner time and they nicked my lunch. It was in the corridor and everything, everyone was laughing at me.(she starts crying again)
Mel: Sarah, you're not fat, okay.
Sarah: Oh come off it Mel. These days anyone over a size 12 is fat.
Kelly: And Marilyn Monroe was a size 14.
Sarah: But I'm not her am I? I'm not blonde and beautiful, I'm not famous, loads of rich men aren't trying to get off with me. Anyway, she killed herself.
Kelly: I'm only trying to help.
Sarah: Well you're not helping. You can't help. I can't stop them, neither can you and I just can't carry on every day like this, I just can't.
Mel: Yes you can. You can't let them beat you.
Sarah: But they have beaten me, I just can't stand it any more Mel. The mad thing is a can sort of handle the big stuff, you know, like when they got at me today. But it's when they laugh at me behind my back, or when those girls in my fashion design class won't let me sit with them, it's that stuff that really gets to me.
Kelly: All right, we've got to do something Sarah. Me and Mel are not going to let you just keep skiving or go to another school. What are we gonna do Mel?
Sarah: This has been going on ever since I came to this school. How come you think anything will change now?
Kelly: Has your mum been up to school about it?
Sarah: She wouldn't understand. I could tell my dad if he wasn't so busy, I suppose he might come..
Mel: We've got to go and see Miss Lamley, Sarah. I'm not taking no for an answer.
Sarah: What can she do?
Mel: I know she can do something. She's really keen on getting bullying stopped and I know some kids she really sorted out.
Sarah: But it might just make it worse.
Kelly: No she won't. I went to see her after she did that assembly on bullying cos Joanne had said some right nasty things to me in the library. I dunno what she did, but honestly, it didn't make it worse.
Mel: Look Sarah, I dunno exactly what Miss Lamley will do, but you've got to trust her. It's her job, and we can't stop Joanne and Kirstie bullying you by ourselves.
Kelly: And maybe she can stop everyone else just saying nothing. I mean, you said no-one did anything when Jamie and Terry were nicking your dinner.
